The Rhode Island Homestead Chicken Coop Hen House is quality tongue and groove construction!
Hen house capacity? We say 10 chickens, but you could have more based on a few factors to consider: what breed are you getting, and are you able to let them free range? We recommend taking a look at the measurements and seeing what you feel comfortable with.
Keep in mind the chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on the roosting rods!
This Rhode Island Homestead chicken coop was engineered to be solid! Notice the support under the nesting boxes! There are FOUR roosting rods in this hen house. There are two large vents. The back door swings open allowing wide access to the hen house. Sliding plastic poop tray (metal poop trays rust from chicken poop over time), sliding door to close off the hen house etc. We also build and sell run extensions and have families purchasing multiple hen houses and run extensions to accommodate their flock.

Please note this product is only the hen house so you would need to buy the hen house plus the run if you wanted both of them.

The dimensions of the chicken coop hen house are:
65.5 inches wide x 67 inches tall x 42 inches long
The inside of the coop (not including the nesting boxes) is: 38 inches wide X 38 inches long and 47 inches tall.
The nesting boxes are spacious and you'll see the girls share nests. Below is a picture that outlines the measurements of the hen house:
The panels come preassembled with predrilled holes and the heavy gauge wire mesh is already attached. Each piece is labeled and the instructions are written by us and clear for assembly! Although this hen house is more expensive than others you will see online, the difference in quality is night and day!
A few additional points to consider:
Our coop has flashing above the nesting box roof lids to prevent water from running into the nesting box
Our carabiners and other hardware are heavy-duty stainless steel
We use nuts and bolts to attach the ladder to the hen house as well as to attach the nesting box roof lids to the hen house (this may seem insignificant, however, without nuts and bolts on these pieces you cut the life expectancy drastically)
Our hen house has multiple vents providing important airflow
Each panel has four additional diagonal wooden support pieces
Run extension/support under each nesting box (without support the nesting boxes sag and quickly fall apart
Acrylic sliding window rather than wood which can shrink or expand and make it difficult to open the windows/vents
Hard plastic liner under all roof panels for durability and weatherproofing
We use 16 gauge galvanized steel mesh (twice as thick as most other coops)
We use heavy-duty hardware (Ajustlock bolt latches!)
EVERY piece is labeled and our instructions are thorough and written by us =)

Final Suggestions:
Since they are made of wood and will be outside 24/7, we STRONGLY recommend that you stain, lacquer, or paint your Rhode Island Homestead chicken coop hen house. The stain applied is a base coat that is not designed to protect your coop long-term from the elements. Often in transit parts can get dinged or scratched etc. You may need to touch up your coop before staining or painting it!
Once set up we recommend anchoring it down, this can be as simple as a stake on each side of the hen house and run area. As much as we have tried to predator-proof our coops, you know your area best and you may want to put wire around your coop, or put pavers. You'll always want to double-check hardware and latches to make sure everything is tight and secure. For larger predators like bears, you will want to look at installing an electric fence around the perimeter.

Your coop will arrive pre-assembled and flat-packed in 2 to 3 boxes. Instructions for easy assembly are included. A dedicate 2-3 hours is about all you’ll need. All cutting, gluing, and stapling have been done for you. Simply assemble and attach a few included hardware pieces.

PLEASE NOTE: We have since added many features since the recording of this video. Aprons no longer ship inside the box, We’ve added an additional roosting bar inside the coop, nesting boxes and the end of the run now have doors underneath…It’s hard to keep up with continuous improvements!

The 3 to 4 boxes (depending on the Run you purchase) are shipped via Freight because of their size to ensure they arrive together and avoid getting tossed around throughout the shipping process.
Due to the size and value of the items, an appointment or approval to drop the package may be required and will be confirmed via text or call from the driver.
Shipping times vary by location, but customers on average receive this coop 9-12 days after purchase.
Q: Can I attach more than one Run?
A: Yes! The runs are designed to be able to add on. Look at our Testimonials Page to see how customers have creatively increased their flocks room to roam.
Q: What kind of stain or paint do you use?
A: We put two coats of a water-based stain on your coop. This provides protection right out of the box. Like all outdoor wood structures, paint or stain will protect your coop and we recommend doing it every year. You can purchase Chicken Coop Company stain on our site and pick it up at your local Sherwin Williams. We offer a 10% discount.
Q: Can I paint my coop?
A: Yes! We use water-based stain as a base, so you can paint over it with the color of your choice. Look at our testimonials page (link) for some inspiration!
Q: How does this coop hold up in the rough weather?
A: This coop is designed to withstand wind and storms. Long-term customers are happy in 49 states (sorry hawaii). It is heavy enough and the run extending under the nesting boxes ensures a stable foundation. For added stability, ground stakes or U stakes can be used. The Predator Protection Kit we offer also serves as an effective way to stake the coop down. The #1 factor is a level surface.
Q: It’s hot in our area, what do we do?
A: Our coops have multiple vents in the hen house, this air flow helps keep your girls healthy and reduces the temperature in the hen house. You can also spray the ground with water or add a roof to the run to reduce sun exposure. This will reduce their body temperature too. Sometimes we will give our girls frozen corn or something from the fridge to cool them down =).
Q: It’s cold in our area, what do we do?
A: The coop is designed to keep the elements out while allowing ventilation, which is the #1 way to protect birds in cold weather. Chickens run a high body temp and are very resilient. Chicken Coop Heaters can help when temps are very cold or below 0. We recommend radiant heaters over bulbs. This heats the chickens, not the air, reducing the requirement for added insulation to keep the heat in. Make sure that you have a chicken water heater so your flock stays hydrated on those cold days.
Q: Can we Put wheels on this Coop?
A: The coop is designed to be stationary, but it is light enough to move with two people or use a wheel system. If you use wheels, the best option is the kind you can place under the coop and remove after moving. Simply detach the run before lifting or moving.
